Bloomdel home stay is located in the beautiful village of Dawai Pani in the Darjeeling hills, India. It was started to bring about a socioeconomic and cultural change in the rural parts of Darjeeling Hills. Breaking off from the conventional form of tourism where the economic benefit is concentrated to a certain section and the common people remain untouched, we started a community based tourism in Dawai Pani. Home stay is a relatively new concept that is fast becoming popular in Darjeeling. With the opening of home stays the dynamics of tourism in the hills has changed dramatically, providing opportunity for individual home owners to earn extra income. So, these home stays are run by individual families and they are doing pretty good. Although it did usher a socioeconomic change but has not been too successful in moving the community as a whole. Only individual home owners are benefiting from this sudden boom in this form of tourism. Families owning bigger houses or with financial capacity are being able to entertain tourists and earn handsomely. But people from the lower strata of the society with no big houses and economically backward are being marginalized and are not getting a share of the pie. To make this truly a community based tourism, where people from the local community are involved, we started Bloomdel home stay with the objective of involving the local community so that everyone from the community gets a share. We have engaged the locals in running this homestay with individual task and responsibility, making it truly a community run home stay rather than a family run.
